New Patients at Back In Balance Chiropractic

Welcome to Back In Balance. Whether you’re considering NUCCA upper cervical care for the first time or coming to us after trying other approaches, we want your experience to be clear, straightforward, and unhurried. This page walks you through what to expect from your first visit through the start of your care — including paperwork, timing, what to bring, insurance, and how the NUCCA new patient process works.

Before Your First Visit

To make your first appointment as efficient as possible, please complete a few steps in advance:

New Patient Paperwork

Please complete our new patient intake forms before your first visit. This gives us a thorough understanding of your health history and current concerns so we can spend more of your visit time on evaluation and discussion.

Download and complete new patient paperwork here

For patients under 18: A parent or legal guardian must sign the completed paperwork before the initial appointment. All forms must be signed to move forward with care.

What to Bring to Your First Visit

  • Completed new patient intake forms (or arrive 15 minutes early to complete in office)
  • Photo ID
  • Insurance card (if using insurance)
  • List of current medications (including supplements)
  • Any prior imaging (MRI, CT, X-rays) — physical films, CDs, or digital reports
  • Records from any specialists related to your condition (neurologist, orthopedist, physical therapist, etc.)
  • Comfortable clothing that allows movement of your neck and shoulders
  • For auto accident cases: police report, insurance claim number, and adjuster contact information
  • For work injury cases: L&I claim number and employer information

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your initial NUCCA experience is structured across two visits so we can complete a thorough evaluation before making any correction. This approach reflects the precision-based nature of NUCCA care — we don't make corrections without objective measurements to guide them.

Visit 1: Consultation, Examination, and Imaging (45–60 minutes)

Your first visit focuses entirely on understanding your situation before any correction is made:

  • Thorough consultation — Dr. Schallmann reviews your symptoms, health history, prior injuries, current medications, any specialists you're working with, and your goals for care
  • Physical examination — includes neurological screening, range of motion assessment, palpation, and postural evaluation
  • Postural measurements — objective measurements of head tilt, shoulder height, hip alignment, and functional leg length that we'll track at every subsequent visit
  • 3D upper cervical imaging — precise digital X-rays measuring atlas (C1) position to a fraction of a degree. This is essential for NUCCA — no correction is made without this measurement
  • Honest evaluation — if NUCCA isn't likely to help your specific situation, we'll tell you directly and help point you toward appropriate resources rather than proceed with care that isn't a good fit

No correction is made at this visit. This gives us time to analyze your imaging thoroughly and develop a specific correction plan tailored to your measurements.

Visit 2: Report of Findings and First Correction (45–60 minutes)

Your second visit is where care begins:

  • Report of findings — Dr. Schallmann reviews your imaging with you, explains what the measurements show, and walks through the specific correction plan for your situation
  • Discussion and questions — this is the time to ask any questions about your care plan, expected timeline, and what to expect
  • First correction — the calibrated correction based on your specific measurements. Most patients describe it as light finger pressure behind the ear. No twisting, popping, or high-velocity thrust
  • Post-correction imaging — confirms the alignment change objectively
  • Rest period — a short rest allows the correction to settle
  • Post-correction assessment — postural measurements are repeated to document immediate changes

What Happens After Your First Two Visits

The visits that follow are typically shorter (15–30 minutes) since we already have your baseline measurements. Each follow-up visit includes assessment of whether alignment has held, objective postural measurements, and correction only when clinically indicated. Unlike traditional chiropractic where an adjustment is delivered at every visit, NUCCA holds when the alignment is stable — meaning fewer corrections over time is a sign of success, not something to worry about.

Visit frequency varies significantly by condition. Chronic conditions typically involve more frequent care during the initial correction phase (usually 2–3 weeks), then reduced frequency as alignment stabilizes. Many patients transition to periodic maintenance visits — monthly initially, then less frequent. We're transparent about visit frequency and don't recommend care that isn't producing meaningful benefit.

Insurance and Payment

We accept most major insurance plans including Kaiser Permanente PPO, Anthem BCBS, Aetna, Premera, Regence, United Healthcare, Medicare, First Choice, Lifewise, Uniform Medical, Labor and Industries (L&I) for work injuries, and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) for auto accident cases.

Before starting care, we verify your specific insurance benefits and provide a clear picture of your out-of-pocket cost. For patients paying out of pocket, we offer payment options tailored to your situation. Under the federal No Surprises Act, we provide a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges so you know what to expect financially before committing.

Common Questions Before Your First Visit

How much does the initial consultation cost?

Your initial consultation is complimentary. There's no charge for the initial visit whether you decide to proceed with care or not.

What if I've never had chiropractic care before?

Many of our patients are new to chiropractic. NUCCA is often a good starting point for people who've been hesitant about traditional chiropractic because there's no twisting or popping. We'll walk you through everything and answer any questions during your first visit.

What if I've had negative experiences with chiropractic before?

NUCCA is fundamentally different from traditional high-velocity manipulation. Patients who haven't tolerated traditional chiropractic often do well with NUCCA precisely because there's no rotation or forceful thrust. If you've had a bad experience with cracking or twisting, NUCCA is worth considering.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No referral is needed to see us — chiropractors in Washington are primary care providers within their scope. That said, we coordinate with your medical team when appropriate and welcome any records or context from your other healthcare providers.

What if I'm pregnant?

NUCCA is generally well-tolerated during pregnancy because the correction is gentle and doesn't involve rotation or high-velocity thrust. Many pregnant patients find NUCCA helpful for postural adaptation, headaches, and pelvic alignment.

Can I bring a family member or friend?

Absolutely. Many patients bring a spouse, parent, or friend to their initial consultation for support. We're happy to have them present during the discussion portions of your visit.

Ready to Get Started?

Your initial consultation is complimentary. We'll take a thorough history, complete appropriate assessments, and give you a direct read on whether NUCCA is likely to help your specific situation.
