About Back In Balance Chiropractic

Back In Balance Chiropractic is a NUCCA upper cervical practice serving Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, and the greater Seattle Eastside. We take a specialized approach to chiropractic care — one focused on precision, gentleness, and honest evaluation of whether NUCCA is the right fit for your specific situation.

Our Practice Philosophy

Chiropractic care has a wide spectrum — from aggressive high-velocity manipulation to gentle, precision-focused approaches. We chose to specialize exclusively in NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) technique because it offers what many patients are looking for: a gentle, measurement-based approach with no twisting, popping, or forceful thrusts. Our practice is built on three principles: precision (3D imaging measures atlas alignment before every correction), gentleness (a calibrated contact behind the ear, not high-velocity manipulation), and honesty (we tell you if NUCCA isn’t likely to help your specific situation rather than proceed with care that isn’t a good fit).

Meet Dr. Justin Schallmann - Upper Cervical Chiropractor

Dr. Justin Schallmann is a NUCCA Part 2 Certified chiropractor — one of approximately 300 doctors worldwide trained and actively practicing this specialty technique. He has been serving the Seattle Eastside for over 18 years, providing NUCCA upper cervical care to patients from Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, Bothell, Snohomish, and throughout the greater Seattle area.

Dr. Schallmann’s approach: use 3D imaging to measure the exact atlas (C1) misalignment, deliver a gentle calibrated correction based on those measurements, then track objective progress at every visit. If NUCCA isn’t the right fit for a patient’s specific situation, he’ll say so directly rather than proceed with care that isn’t likely to help.

What Makes NUCCA Different

NUCCA is a specialized subspecialty within chiropractic that differs fundamentally from traditional chiropractic manipulation. Rather than rotation-based high-velocity thrusts across multiple spinal levels, NUCCA focuses exclusively on the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) — the top two vertebrae of the cervical spine that support the head’s weight and influence overall postural alignment.

Every correction is preceded by precise 3D imaging that measures atlas position to a fraction of a degree. The correction itself is a light, calibrated contact behind the ear — no twisting, popping, or forceful thrust. Post-correction imaging confirms the alignment change. This precision-based approach is why NUCCA is a smaller subspecialty within chiropractic and why it’s often the right fit for patients who don’t tolerate traditional high-velocity manipulation.

What We Treat

NUCCA upper cervical care is best suited for conditions where upper cervical (atlas/C1) dysfunction contributes to symptoms. Common presentations we address include:

  • Migraines and headaches
  • Neck pain and cervicogenic pain patterns
  • Vertigo and dizziness (including vestibular migraine and cervicogenic dizziness)
  • TMJ and jaw pain
  • Whiplash injuries and post-concussion syndrome
  • Craniocervical instability (CCI)
  • Chronic pain conditions with a cervical component
  • Post-traumatic patterns following head or neck injury

We also provide complementary care for patients dealing with fibromyalgia, sciatica, disc-related conditions, and other presentations where cervical or postural factors contribute to the broader picture. For every patient, we’re transparent about what NUCCA can and can’t do — no overpromising.
