Allergy Care
Allergy-Related Care in Redmond, WA rstanding Allergies
Let’s be direct upfront: NUCCA upper cervical chiropractic does not treat allergies. Allergies are immune system responses that require medical evaluation and evidence-based allergy care — typically from your primary care physician or an allergist. Where NUCCA may have a narrow complementary role is with cervicogenic symptoms that are sometimes confused with or coexist with allergies — cervicogenic headaches misattributed to sinus pressure, facial tension patterns, and neck-related symptoms that can occur alongside allergy season.
If you’re looking for allergy treatment, please see an allergist. If you have neck-related symptoms and also happen to have allergies, we can help with the cervical component while your medical team manages the allergies.
Understanding Allergies
An allergy is a hypersensitivity response by your immune system to a substance (an allergen) that most people tolerate without reaction. Common allergens include pollens, dust mites, animal dander, molds, certain foods (peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, dairy, eggs, wheat, soy), insect stings, medications, and latex. When the immune system encounters an allergen, it releases inflammatory mediators (particularly histamine) that produce the familiar allergy symptoms.
Allergies are common — approximately 30% of adults and 40% of children in the United States have at least one allergic condition. Common presentations include seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever), perennial allergic rhinitis (year-round), allergic conjunctivitis (eye allergies), atopic dermatitis (eczema), allergic asthma, food allergies, and drug allergies. Severity ranges from mild seasonal discomfort to life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Recognizing Anaphylaxis — Medical Emergency
ANAPHYLAXIS IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY. If you or someone with you experiences signs of severe allergic reaction — difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat or tongue, widespread hives, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, sudden drop in blood pressure, loss of consciousness — call 911 immediately. If you have a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen, Auvi-Q, Adrenaclick), use it immediately even if you’re unsure — under-treatment is more dangerous than unnecessary use. Epinephrine buys time; you still need emergency medical care afterward.
This is not a situation for chiropractic care, home remedies, or waiting to see if symptoms resolve. Every minute matters in anaphylaxis. Call 911, use epinephrine if available, and get to the emergency room.
Common Allergy Symptoms
Allergy symptoms depend on the type of allergy and severity. Common presentations include:
Evidence-Based Allergy Management
Effective allergy management is medical care, not chiropractic care. The following approaches have strong evidence bases and should be your primary strategies:
Where NUCCA May Have a Narrow Complementary Role
NUCCA does NOT treat allergies. What NUCCA may help with is cervicogenic symptoms that are sometimes confused with or coexist with allergies:
Note the pattern: NUCCA addresses the cervical component of symptoms, not the allergic component. If your primary issue is allergies, allergist care is your first stop. If you have cervical involvement as well, NUCCA may complement your allergy management — but it’s not a substitute for evidence-based allergy care.
Why NUCCA Is Different — When Cervical Involvement Is Present
For patients where cervical dysfunction is contributing to symptoms alongside allergies, NUCCA offers a precise, gentle approach. Traditional chiropractic manipulation isn’t appropriate for many patients — the twisting and popping can be uncomfortable, particularly for patients whose systems are already dealing with allergic inflammation. NUCCA uses precise 3D imaging to measure atlas position before any correction, and the correction itself is a gentle contact behind the ear — no twisting, popping, or forceful thrust.
No twisting
No rotation-based neck movement.
No cracking
No popping or high-velocity thrust.
Precision imaging
Upper cervical alignment is assessed before every correction.
Gentle contact
A calibrated finger contact behind the ear — no thrust, no force.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
1. Consultation and history. We review your presenting symptoms, current allergy management (allergist, medications, triggers), any cervical symptoms, and injury history. If you’re primarily looking for allergy treatment, we’ll direct you to appropriate resources rather than proceed.
2. Assessment. If cervical involvement is likely contributing to your symptom picture, we complete appropriate assessments including 3D upper cervical imaging.
3. Honest evaluation. After assessment, we give you a direct read on whether NUCCA is likely to help your specific presentation. If your symptoms are primarily allergic in origin, we’ll say so and refer you to an allergist rather than proceed with care that won’t address the actual driver.
4. First correction (if appropriate). If cervical care is warranted, the correction is gentle. Most patients describe it as light finger pressure behind the ear.
When NUCCA Is Not the Right Fit
For most allergy-related situations, NUCCA is not the appropriate approach. You should see appropriate medical providers if:

What the Research Shows
To be direct: there is no credible peer-reviewed evidence that chiropractic care treats allergies. Any chiropractor claiming to treat allergies is overreaching. What we can share is evidence for upper cervical care’s effect on cervical function generally — relevant if you have cervical symptoms alongside allergies, not relevant to the allergies themselves.

Atlas vertebra realignment and achievement of arterial pressure goal in hypertensive patients: a pilot study.
Journal of Human Hypertension. 2007;21(5):347–352.
Foundational evidence that precise atlas alignment produces measurable systemic physiological effects. Relevant to establishing that NUCCA has real physiological effects — not relevant to claiming allergy treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can chiropractic cure my allergies?
No. Any chiropractor claiming to cure allergies is overreaching. Allergies are immune system responses. They require medical management from an allergist or primary care physician. NUCCA may complement care for cervicogenic symptoms that sometimes coexist with allergies, but it does not treat the underlying immune response.
My chiropractor said adjustments will help my allergies — is that true?
The evidence doesn’t support that claim. This is a common overreach in some chiropractic marketing. If your primary concern is allergies, an allergist is the appropriate provider. If you also have cervical symptoms, chiropractic care may help with those — but that’s different from treating the allergies themselves.
What if my “sinus headaches” don’t respond to allergy medication?
Many headaches thought to be sinus-related are actually cervicogenic or tension-type. If your headaches don’t respond to appropriate allergy treatment, a cervical evaluation may be worthwhile. NUCCA can address the cervicogenic component — the headaches, in this case, weren’t really from your sinuses.
Can NUCCA help my child’s allergies?
NUCCA doesn’t treat pediatric allergies any more than it treats adult allergies. Children with allergic conditions should be evaluated by their pediatrician or a pediatric allergist. For children with cervical symptoms alongside allergies, we can discuss whether NUCCA might help with the cervical component.
Should I stop taking my allergy medications?
No — don’t change your allergy medications based on chiropractic care. Any changes to medications should be discussed with your prescribing physician. Your medications are managing an immune response that NUCCA doesn’t affect.
What about food allergies?
Food allergies require proper diagnosis by an allergist (skin prick testing, blood testing, or supervised oral food challenges). NUCCA plays no role in food allergy management. If you suspect food allergies, see an allergist. If you have diagnosed food allergies and separately have cervical symptoms, we can help with the cervical component.
My allergies make me exhausted — can NUCCA help with the fatigue?
Chronic allergies cause fatigue through inflammatory burden, poor sleep from congestion, and the effect of antihistamines. Treating the allergies effectively (via allergist care) is the primary approach to allergy-related fatigue. If cervical dysfunction is contributing to your fatigue picture as well, NUCCA may help with that component — but it doesn’t address the allergic contributor to fatigue.
Is it worth getting NUCCA if I have allergies?
It depends on whether you have cervical symptoms independent of the allergies. If your only concerns are allergy-related, NUCCA isn’t the right approach — see an allergist. If you have cervical symptoms (neck pain, cervicogenic headaches, TMJ, vertigo, etc.) alongside allergies, NUCCA may help with those specific cervical concerns while your allergy team manages the allergies.
Can NUCCA help with asthma?
NUCCA does not treat asthma. Asthma is a chronic airway condition requiring pulmonary/allergist management with appropriate inhalers and long-term controllers. Managing asthma outside of proper medical care can be dangerous, particularly during exacerbations. If you have asthma alongside cervical symptoms, we can discuss the cervical component — but your asthma management stays with your medical team.
Do you accept insurance for cervical care?
Yes. Most major insurance plans that cover chiropractic care will cover NUCCA when medically appropriate. Our office accepts most major insurance including Kaiser Permanente PPO, Anthem BCBS, Aetna, Premera, Regence, United Healthcare, Medicare, and others. Note that insurance covers chiropractic care for cervical conditions — not for treating allergies.
When should I see an allergist versus my primary care physician?
Start with your primary care physician for straightforward allergic rhinitis or mild allergies. See an allergist when: symptoms are severe or affecting quality of life, standard treatments aren’t providing adequate control, you have suspected food allergies, you have asthma, you’re considering immunotherapy, you have unusual reactions, or you’ve experienced anaphylaxis. Ask your primary care doctor for a referral if needed.
