Neuropathy Treatment
Neuropathy is a condition that occurs when nerves become damaged or irritated, often causing pain, tingling, numbness, burning, or weakness. These symptoms most commonly affect the hands and feet, but neuropathy can affect other areas of the body as well.
Peripheral neuropathy is one of the most common forms of neuropathy. It may develop gradually and can interfere with walking, balance, sleep, and everyday activities. The symptoms and severity can vary from person to person depending on the underlying cause and the nerves involved.
Common symptoms of neuropathy include burning or sharp pain, tingling or pins and needles, numbness, increased sensitivity to touch, muscle weakness, and problems with balance or coordination.
Medical Approach to Neuropathy
Phase I: Diagnosis and Medication
The first step in managing neuropathy is identifying the possible underlying cause. A physician may review your medical history, perform a physical examination, and recommend blood tests or other diagnostic testing when appropriate.
Medications may be used to help manage neuropathic pain and other symptoms. Depending on the individual situation, treatment may include medications specifically designed to reduce nerve pain. Treatment should always be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
Phase II: Physical Therapy and Supportive Care
Physical therapy may help individuals maintain strength, flexibility, mobility, and balance when neuropathy affects movement or coordination.
Lifestyle changes and treatment of an underlying condition may also be recommended. For example, people with diabetes may benefit from careful management of blood glucose levels. Proper nutrition and regular physical activity may also play a role in overall nerve health.
Phase III: Treatment of the Underlying Cause
When an underlying condition is contributing to neuropathy, addressing that condition is an important part of treatment. The appropriate approach depends on the cause, the nerves affected, and the severity and duration of symptoms.
The NUCCA Approach to Neuropathy
At Back In Balance, we take a whole-body approach when evaluating patients experiencing neuropathy symptoms. NUCCA chiropractic care focuses on the alignment of the upper cervical spine and its relationship to overall posture and balance.
Our approach is intended to support proper spinal alignment and balance throughout the body. When the body is better balanced, it may help reduce physical stress and improve overall musculoskeletal function.
Because neuropathy can have many different causes, proper evaluation is important. NUCCA care should not be considered a replacement for appropriate medical evaluation or treatment of an underlying neurological condition.
If you are experiencing numbness, tingling, burning, or other symptoms associated with neuropathy, our team at Back In Balance can discuss your symptoms and determine whether NUCCA care may be appropriate for you.
