Sciatica

If you have hip pain you know how problematic it can be. We use our hips constantly and if you have that type of pain, it means you are constantly suffering. It also means that you have a problem that may be difficult to diagnose.

Hip problems are often confused with lower back (lumbar spine) issues. The sensation can best be described as shooting pains down the leg or numbness in the leg and pain in the joint itself.

Medical Approach to Sciatica & Hip Pain

There are a number of medications available for the treatment of hip pain. Some of these reduce inflammation, relax muscle tension and spasms while dealing with the actual pain, but both the popular prescription and over-the-counter choices can have serious side effects. Physical Therapy is another option.

The NUCCA Approach to Sciatica & Hip Pain

Sciatica refers to pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling in the leg. It is caused by injury to or pressure on the sciatic nerve. Sciatica and hip pain are common problems with many causes.

This makes it difficult to properly pinpoint the specific problem and treat it. It is important to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause based on the symptoms so that the appropriate treatment can be recommended to deal with the underlying problem.

If you have hip or sciatica pain, some common causes include:

  • Arthritis
  • Muscle spasm
  • Bursitis

Spinal misalignment is the most common cause of hip and sciatica pain. When the spine misaligns, the balance of the body moves off center. This causes an increased load on one side of the body and unevenly wears on the joints.

It is common to have multiple stress areas on one side of the body (i.e. right neck pain, right low back pain, right hip pain, sciatica). This significant indicator of a spinal misalignment should be evaluated by a NUCCA Chiropractor.
